Fascia, Soffit & Gutter Repair

Fascia, Soffit and Gutter Damage Diagnosis and Repairs

Keeping your house looking beautiful and functioning well year in and year out is a demanding job. The roof overhang area of your home deserves routine inspection by you as the homeowner. It is key to take a walk around your home several times a year and look carefully at the gutters, the soffit, and the fascia.

Fascia, soffit, gutter identification

Figure 1 may help you identify the terms and better understand what you are looking for if you are not familiar with these things.

Gutters are installed into the fascia board. Over time, leaking gutters will cause rotting of the fascia board. If a damaged fascia board is not replaced, then additional damage to the gutters, shingles, and soffit can occur. Catching damage in its early stages can prevent costly, extensive repairs later.

What are the telltale signs of damage to the fascia or soffit? As shown in Figure 2, look for:

  • Peeling paint

  • Splintered-looking wood or cracks in the wood

  • Area of discoloration

  • Sagging soffit board

You will also want to evaluate the functioning of your gutters at least a couple of times a year. To do this, you will need to walk around your house when it is raining. What are you looking for when it is raining? Use this checklist to determine if your gutters are functioning appropriately:

1 - Do you see water shooting over the gutter at any point (especially at the corners)?

This indicates clogged gutters or clogged downspouts or possibly improperly positioned gutters.

2 - Is water dripping between the gutter and the fascia board?

This is a problem that will damage the fascia board more quickly.

3 - Is water dripping from the soffit?

This is an indication that the roof is impaired. A roofer should be consulted.

4 - Is water bubbling from the ground where the downspout goes into the underground drain?

This lets you know the underground drain may be clogged.

Once the rain stops, go out again for another loop around to check for the following:

1 - Look to see if water is dripping from the gutters at the corners of the house.

This indicates water is still standing in gutters. The seals may be bad or the gutters may be clogged.

2 - Are the gutters sagging?

This indicates either really full gutters or weak supports from rotten fascia board.

3 - Look for holes in the ground under the downspout.

This suggests clogged gutters and overflowing water. Be aware that asphalt granules from shingles can clog your gutters.
